Express Security Course Delivery
This course has a blended delivery mode of online and face-to-face, with the face-to-face component of the course being delivered over a five consecutive day workshop, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day. The five day workshop consists of practical sessions delivered by an experienced security professional in the following conditions:
- An Classroom Based Learning
- An exciting environment where you will learn invaluable skills such as defensive tactics, conflict negotiation, crowd control, and more
As part of the online component of the course, online assessment activities must be completed prior to commencing the face-to-face component of the course. The online assessment activities consists of:
- Interactive learning modules
- Multiple choice questions
- Reading materials
Please Note: If you currently hold a current HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificate and can provide evidence, your attendance is only required on 4 out of the 5 scheduled days (subject to approval).
Pre-Requisites and Entry requirements
There are no formal pre-requisites or entry requirements for enrolling into this course. However, you must be eligible to apply for a security licence which means you must not have been convicted of a disqualifying offence in the past 10 years, where a conviction was recorded.
Minimum Age:
The minimum age at commencement of this course is 18 years of age.
Language, Learning & Numeracy:
Students will need to have an appropriate level of written and spoken English as well as numeracy skills suitable for employment within the private security industry. At your pre-training review, you will be provided with an LLN Assessment to determine if you have a sufficient level of literacy and numeracy in order to undertake this course.
Physical requirements:
Students should be physically fit with good vision and hearing, and the ability to respond quickly to cues. You will need to be able to stand on your feet for extended periods of time – sometimes many hours – and be able to perform a range of physical tasks every day.
Express Security Course Pathways
We recommend giving yourself the best chance of finding employment by adding qualifications to the Certificate II in Security Operations. Qualifications may include:
- AVI20118 Certificate II in Transport Security Protection
- Firearms and Defensive Tactics for the Security Industry – QLD only
- Industry Skill Sets – Bodyguard, Cash-in-Transit, Batons and Handcuffs – QLD only
- CPP30619 Certificate III in Investigative Services
- Responsible Service of Alcohol (required for crowd controllers) – Available in QLD only
- OHS White Card (required for a number of static guard positions) – Available in QLD only

Can you do the security course online?
No, while certain components of the course can be done online, face-to-face learning is integral to security training. Practical skills such as unarmed defense and first aid can only be acquired through in-person instruction.
How long does the security course take?
Our security course follows a blended delivery approach. Domestic students attend five days of full-time, in-person training and complete an online theoretical segment comprising 26 chapters of self-paced multiple-choice questions. The completion time for the security course varies based on the student’s progress in the online section. Students have up to three (3) months to complete the course from the enrolment date.
What jobs can I get after doing a security licence course?
Upon successful course completion and obtaining your security license, you’ll have access to a wide range of job roles. Specific positions may differ by state, but common examples include security guard, security officer, crowd controller, or loss prevention officer.
Do I need a background check to become a security guard?
Yes, all aspiring security guards must undergo a mandatory criminal history check. Eligibility for a security license may be affected if you have certain disqualifying offenses within the last 10 years, affiliations with known criminals, or are subject to specific orders. Can I transfer my security licence to a different state?

Is first aid included as part of this course?
Yes, first aid HLTAID011 is a unit of competency within the Cert II Security Operations course and will show on your qualification transcript. If you require a separate certificate for first aid which includes all three of the above units, there will be a cost of $30 for this document.
What are some other beneficial qualifications?
Security guards often work in venues serving alcohol or permitting gambling. Consequently, holding Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and/or Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RSG) qualifications can be advantageous.
