HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting
The new HLTAID012 Provide Child Care First Aid is an accredited child care first aid course for anyone regularly around children and infants will benefit from this course and its targeted approach.
The Provide First Aid Course is made up of these units of the HLT training package:
- HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support
- HLTAID011 Provide first aid
- HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
The HLTAID012 Child Care First Aid Course is the current nationally recognised certificate course. It’s a first aid qualification that is valid for 3 years, although the CPR unit should be renewed annually. Because it’s nationally recognised training, you need a unique student identifier (USI) to enrol. You can easily get a USI with a drivers licence or Medicare number from this site. The CPR training is based on the Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines.

What's involved in the Child Care First Aid Course?
The HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in education and care course teaches basic emergency life support and how to perform CPR. We delivers this course with the entire content of HLTAID011 Provide First Aid with the addition of common infant and child ailments such as febrile convulsion, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration.
First Aid Training Covers:
- How to apply DRSABCD
- Provide first aid to someone who is unconscious but breathing in the right position to keep the airway clear
- Do 2 minutes of CPR on an adult manikin
- Do CPR on an infant manikin for 2 minutes
- Deliver at least one shock with a defibrillator (AED)
- Help perform CPR with minimal pauses
- Respond appropriately in the event of vomiting to manage a first aid situation
- Learn first aid so you can confidently manage these conditions: choking, asthma, non-life-threatening bleeding, nosebleed, anaphylaxis, shock, dislocations, fractures, sprains and strains.
- Use pressure immobilisation bandaging for snakebite
- Apply First Aid to minor wound cleaning and dressing
- Using personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Provide appropriate first aid treatment
- Effectively communicate details of an incident to emergency services and dial 000
- Provide an accurate written incident report covering first aid management applied
- PLUS, much more so you can confidently manage a casualty
Child Care First Aid Course Requirements
Due to parts of the First Aid training involving the need to prepare an incident report and answering a number of written questions, you must have a basic level of literacy and be a minimum of fourteen years old.
International Students
Skills Training College is a CRICOS provider meaning that international students can enrol to do this First Aid training course with us. However, international students must check with the Department of Home Affairs to see if they have the appropriate visa. Furthermore, you must be actively enrolled in another principal course with a CRICOS institution. The English language skills for studying in Australia apply to this First Aid course.
Physical Requirements
The CPR component of this course requires the student to kneel on the floor and compress the chest of a manikin for 2 minutes while providing CPR for assessment. Please contact us if you have any questions about this.
